Enlarged Prostate | Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia | BPH | Manhattan | New York CityBenign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), one of the most common diseases of aging men, can be associated with bothersome urinary symptoms that affect quality of life by interfering with normal daily activities and sleep. The prevalence of bothersome symptoms increases with age. The patient’s perception of the severity of the condition and the degree to which it interferes with his lifestyle is a primary consideration in choosing therapy.

In addition to medications and herbal supplements, there are various procedures which can be used to treat the symptoms of BPH:

  • Transurethral Needle Ablation of the Prostate (TUNA, Prostiva™)
  • Transurethral Microwave Thermotherapy (TUMT, Targis™, Prolieve™
  • Photovaporization of the prostate (PVP, Greenlight™ laser, Revolix™ laser).
  • Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP, prostate scraping)

Although the TURP is a procedure which must be done in the hospital,  the other procedures can all be performed in the office or our outpatient center.  The optimal treatment selection depends on numerous factors, including the size and configuration of the prostate, the condition of the patient’s bladder, the presence of accompanying medical conditions, and the extent of obstruction caused by the prostate.
